Production Sound Mixing

What the heck is production sound mixing?? Rain StormEagle at StormEagle presents his A/V Project from his Capstone Portfolio. This video gives a broad overview of one of the many hats he wears, sound mixing for film/video. Thank you to Thunderfish Sound and Liminal Space Productions for making this video possible!

Behind the scenes

This was a great learning experience. From outlining the script, to organizing production, to editing the final cut of the video. Rain has been developing his skillset in production sound mixing, and wants to help provide reliable information for other audio professionals. This video showcases one of the kits a Production Sound Mixer can use in the field (courtesy of Thunderfish Sound).

Recording & Setup

While I prepared the bag rig to be presented, the team at Liminal determined what gear would work best for the needs of the video. Fortunately, the set they used to test lense could be easily configured to suit the video. We used the bag rig to run sound; I wore a Deity Lav Pro that clipped-on to my shirt, and set up the MKH416 on a boom stand to act as the main microphone.

The Light & Camera Team

The team at Liminal lent their professional help to set up the frame, lighting, set, and backdrop for the video. Andrew Fornadel provided his excellent skillset as a Camera Operator along with John Stanchina as the Director of Photography. Collaborating with them helped solidify many visual elements and bring the vision Rain had for the project to reality.

Camera

We filmed the video with an Arri Alexa 35 camera using Ultra Prime 24mm lens. This, along with the lighting and focus system were provided by Liminal Space Productions. This provided a high-quality picture, and due to the format of the video, it remained stationary for ease of use. We used Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Boxes for syncing sound and video.
